The British Yemeni Society is appealing for funds to support 2 female students from the island of Soqotra to read for a degree in medicine at the University of the Hadhramaut in Mukulla. There are at present no female doctors on the island. Akhalas Mohamed Saad Khatnani was born in Hadibo in September 1992. She graduated from Secondary School in 2011 with a pass mark of 86%. She failed her first attempt at the University Entry Test but is retaking it in July, 2012. She has the support of her family and has made a firm commitment to return
to work on the island after qualification. Haifa Yousr Farij was born on the island in 1990. She was educated on the island and graduated from Secondary School in 2010 with a pass mark of 86%. She has passed the University Entry Test and has received a letter of acceptance. She too has the support of her family and has made a firm commitment to return and work on the island after qualification. Without financial support neither student will be able to undertake this medical degree course which lasts for 6 years. The budget for each student for the full 6 year course is US$11,800 which will cover accommodation in Mukalla, maintenance, books and travel to and from the island etc. A small allowance has also been made for inflation. Both these students are capable and committed and deserve support. They are recommended by Dr Salem Yousr who recently completed, with a distinction, a Masters in tropical paediatrics at the Liverpool School of Tropical
Medicine under British Yemeni Society sponsorship. Their loyalty to the island is total and the long term benefit they will bring to the medical services of the island will be very considerable. Should Akhalas fail her retake in July there is no other suitable candidate with sufficient qualifications to undertake a degree course. However there is one female student, Aziza Ali Muba'arak, who has been accepted to do a 3 year HND nursing course and is seeking sponsorship.
We estimate the cost of sponsoring this 3 year course at US$6,000.
