Our 2017-18 season of talks and events has already started, with a strong and moving presentation by Léonie Northedge and Marwa Baabbad of the Saferworld organisation on “Women’s Role in Conflict, Peace and Security in Yemen” on 7 September. We are looking forward to an update on the political and diplomatic background by our co-President, Simon Shercliff OBE, British Ambassador to Yemen, on 2 November. Then on 16 November we shall have a joint meeting co-hosted by the MBI al-Jaber Foundation with a presentation by Shane Stevenson of OXFAM.
B-YS is not the only organisation organising events and talks on Yemen, and I hope that some at least of our members will have seen the magnificent photographic exhibition of Yemeni architecture “Buildings that fill my eye” before it closed on 23 September, or Noha Sadek’s “Monuments of Faith and Power: Yemen’s Religious Architecture” presentation, also in September. I should mention also Dr St John Simpson’s presentation “Views of Aden” towards the end of that month.
Looking forward, there is a round table discussion on the afternoon of Saturday 7 October organised by Adalah Yemen. It will examine what will need to be done to re-unite and rebuild the country once hostilities have come to an end. Details are on this website (see Events)
On 4 December, marking the 50th anniversary of the British withdrawal from South Yemen in 1967, B-YS is supporting a seminar organised by RUSI. Details will follow.
